The Importance Of Your Mattress
Many people may not think about how important their mattress is to their sleep, back, and overall health. However, an average person will probably spend about a third of their entire lives in their bed (which makes sense, considering that an eight-hour sleep makes up one-third of your 24-hour day). Because of the time you spend resting, sleeping, or trying to sleep in your bed each night, it is worthwhile to consider the impact—negative or positive—your mattress—good or bad—has on your health.
First, even if you think you don’t need a lot of sleep, or quality sleep, think again. Sleep is an essential need for all humans. Sleep allows your body (bones, muscles, nerves) to relax, rest, and rejuvenate and restore itself. It does the same thing with your mind. In fact, adequate and high-quality sleep is vital for good mental health, brain functioning, and productivity. Plenty of high-quality sleep also helps the spine to rest and operate to its full capacity. However, if you’re sleeping on a poor or low-quality mattress or other sleep surface, you are doing your spine, your mind, and the rest of your body a great disservice.
What you choose to sleep on each and every night greatly affects the health of your spine, the health of your body and mind, and the quality of your sleep. For example, if your mattress does not adequately support your spine when you’re lying on the bed, your muscles will become fatigued as they work all night to try to maintain support and good posture and are not given the opportunity to rest. Muscle fatigue could easily lead to a poor night’s sleep, where you’re tossing and turning (trying to get comfortable) all night and waking up frequently.
A good mattress, on the other hand, will allow your spine to maintain a “neutral” position; that is, its natural alignment when you’re standing. This way, your spine and surrounding muscles won’t have to work to try to keep your body in a good posture while sleeping, and can rest instead, allowing your spine, muscles, and entire body to relax and rest, thus improving the quality of your sleep.
If you suffer from insomnia or frequent night-waking, spend your nights tossing and turning to find a comfortable position, and wake up in the morning with an aching back and feeling less than refreshed, you might need a new mattress.
Selecting a good mattress is probably one of the most important things you can do for your life. Having a good sleep at night can improve your overall health and drive. When you’re looking for a mattress and box spring, make sure you select one that will fit your body type.
