Track And Field; The 800 Meter Is A Two-lap Sprint
It is interesting all the misconceptions in Track and Field, some people classify the 800 meter as a long-distance race? Not so I tell you, not even close. The 800-meter is an absolute high-performance race and it is more like a sprint than the 400 meter in fact. It is most definitely a sprint for two-solid laps. The laps from hell, where you give it all you have and then try to finish up at the end with your muscles burning and your feet on fire.
Indeed on a reslite or tartan track you will feel like your feet are on fire and while racing you will feel the pain shoot up your muscles signaling to your brain; Capitan, Scotty here, we are at maximum warp, I do not think the engines can take much more of this. The 800-meter is a punishment worse than any of these snivelers at Guantamo Bay call pain or torture.
It is a self induced contest of wills, where one opponent tests their strength of character and pain tolerance against another and when one man cannot handle it they drop back and the race goes on, they are out of the race. Actually one miss stride or bad move and its over for you and if you get boxed in for more than a few seconds the race leaves you along with the rest in the back of the pack and you can never catch up.
No the 800-meter run is now pansy take it easy and pace yourself distance race. The 800-meter is for the best of the best and those who will not acknowledge pain and commit themselves to go the distance and for the winner victory is sweet as can be as they rip their spikes off their feet to allow for cooling of the heat of friction and then try to stride out a bit only to collapse to ground knowing they won and savoring the victory. For the losers, they may race another day, but for today the winner of the 800-meter is more than a mere sprinter, they are the ultimate sprinter.
