Micromovements For Macro Change
Micromovements
Recently I began Yoga classes at the local athletic club. I’d been feeling the need to get my body back in shape after sitting, sitting, sitting as I did my writing and coaching. But mostly I wanted to get out of the house and be with people. Those of you who work at home and are familiar with the feeling of isolation will understand this need.
I had never done Yoga before and had no idea what to expect. I thought it was all about sitting cross-legged or standing on one foot while listening to my breath. I learned a couple of things that surprised me:
1. Yoga isn’t for wimps.
2. The importance of micromovements.
As we hold a pose, our instructor coaches us on our breathing and suggests the tiniest of micromovements we can make to adjust our pose for more effectiveness. One of these tiny little micromovements almost caused me to collapse. I doubt if the small shift was even visible from an outside viewpoint, but it made a huge difference on what I was experiencing on the inside. I had no idea that such a small change could be so powerful.
Micromovements can be used in any facet of life to make profound, powerful change.Imagine the difference a micromovement could have in the thoughts that constantly wander unrestricted through your head, creating your beliefs… and your life.
What if you made a micromovement to change just one word in the repetitive thoughts that you habitually have? For example you might exchange “should” with “can” or “could”.
I invite you to experience the power of this one tiny shift. Take the Mental Micromovement Challenge and for one week consciously use one - and only one - mental micromovement.
