Susceptibility To Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a state where a person is highly susceptible to outside interference or suggestions. Not all people can be hypnotized and this is a fact. There are factors that researchers believe to be the reasons why some people are more susceptible to hypnosis than others. There are also many ways of hypnotizing an individual and there are many urban legends regarding how an individual can be put under the hypnotist’s control and told to give all his money to the instigator of the hypnosis.
Despite the having started with a sinister reputation, hypnosis is now being used for many things other than entertainment and scams. Some experts in the art of hypnosis treat people with it especially those with conditions that can be controlled by controlling the mind of the sufferer. People who approach experts to use hypnosis to cure them can expect to be hypnotized for a certain time during which subliminal messages are imparted unto him with the use of hypnosis. Using hypnosis as a treatment for certain conditions is based on trust.
Factors That May Lead to Hypnosis
The factors that can lead to one’s susceptibility to being hypnotized are still being studied but theories have labeled them as our degree of fear, amount of imagination in the person, intelligence and personality of the subject. These are loosely claimed to be the major factors to why not all people are prone to hypnosis.
Our degree of fear can hamper our susceptibility to hypnosis because this raises our defense levels making us too aware of everything and not concentrating on the hypnosis going on. The fear acts as a mental barrier that refuses to let your subconscious take a hold of yourself. Fear actually holds you back from succumbing to the hypnotist’s influence.
The amount of imagination that one individual has can make on susceptible to hypnosis. Our imagination usually opens our minds to many things and makes us very accepting. This makes us open and easy to put under the trance like state which is hypnosis. Using our imagination actually broadens our thinking and makes us open to suggestions and interference from others but at the same time having our own personality as well.
Our intelligence or the state of our intelligence is also said to have some influence on our susceptibility to hypnosis. This is because most intelligent people are either open to new experiences to further their horizons or they are too crafty to be put under the influence of another person. Our intelligence may work against us or for us depending on how you might see being hypnotized. This can actually be rectified by adjusting one’s state of mind to be more susceptible to hypnosis.
The personality of the subject is also another aspect that can dictate one’s openness to hypnosis. A fearful or less open personality may be more difficult to put under hypnosis compared to an open person, although, this may be more complicated than it seems because there are several different personalities in the world. Not all personalities have the same facets and even similar ones will have slight differences. An expert hypnotist can actually be good enough to spot someone who is susceptible to hypnosis and someone who is not.
One’s susceptibility to hypnosis can actually be something that one can adjust, if you are determined to do so. This may be the case for people who wish to be treated with hypnotherapy.
