Sunshine Coast Bc
If you are planning a trip or vacation to British Columbia, one area of the province that is really worth the trip is the Sunshine Coast.
Just a short 45 minute car ferry ride from Vancouver BC, you will see some of the most beautiful scenery that British Columbia has to offer. The area does not have road access from Vancouver, but is well populated and frequently visited by tourists.
It is the home of the Beachcombers TV series that was filmed in the town of Gibsons BC for over 19 years and is Canada’s longest running TV series in history. You can even stop in and have a meal at the famous “Mollys Reach Diner”.
The lower Sunshine Coast is 84km in length and is serviced by Hwy 101 also known as the Sunshine Coast Highway. The name “Sunshine Coast” originated from a real estate developer/agent promoting the area in the 60’s and stuck. It is true the Sunshine Coast gets more sunshine hours than the rest of coastal BC as it is protected and in the rain shadow of the mountainous terrain.
Mild winters and warm summers are typical in the area and there is lots to do. Kayaking, boat charters, hiking, mountain biking, waterskiing, salmon fishing, and golf are just a few of the outdoor activities you can enjoy on your visit.
The major communities that make up the 86km stretch are Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay, Madeira Park, Pender Harbour and Egmont.
Egmont, being the community the farthest north is home to the Skookumchuck Narrows, a world phenomena. In the summer is the best viewing time, and you must hike in (1hour) to see the show! A whopping 200 billion gallons of water can flow through this narrow area connecting Sechelt Inlet to Jervis Inlet on a tide change! Truly amazing, a wall of water is formed.
There are many other beautiful sights on the coast from waterfalls to old growth forests. And of course there are beaches to enjoy. This prestine area of coastline offers an array of marine life to view on a low tide, and porpoises and whales are a frequent site.
You will be amazed at the natural beauty. There are also more artists located here than any other area in BC compared to population. There is some truly unique and inspirational pieces to be had. Be sure to visit the local gallaries and artist venues while you are cruising through.
Accommodation can be a bit of a trick, there are no major hotel chains, so B&B’s and cottage rentals are very popular.
Well worth the visit, make sure you check out the Sunshine Coast!
